BUENOS AIRES
Safety:
Personal security and safety is a serious concern everywhere in South America.
Watch for pick-pockets and muggers.
Do not carry anything you cannot give away (earrings, rings, necklace, watch, shoes, etc.)
Do not resist if someone robs you; you don't want scars on your face.
Do not leave anything you cannot lose in your hotel room.
Keep a xerox copy of your passport and visas in your hotel.
Places to stay:
Hotels are very inexpensive due to the recent economic crisis. You can stay at a nice hotel for less than US$50 per
night. (Cheaper rooms start at 10 US$)
San Telmo (district) is close to dance venues but not always the safest area.
Transportation:
Subway and buses go almost everywhere in the city. Some of the buses run 24/7. However, cabs are very
inexpensive and safer (does not mean safe) at night.
Tango Cogntresso Nacional:
Once a year, usually in February or March, Tango Cogntresso Nacional (http://www.cosmotango.com) is hosted by
Fabian Salas for those who are interested in attending a large tango festival. The price for the lessons and hotels
are usually higher at this time.
Places to Dance Tango:
For the list of milonga http://www.abctango.com.ar/milongas/milista.html There are many milongas every night of the week. The
question is which one to choose...?
Dancers tend to go a particular milonga on a particular night. Some places will be empty (which may be good for the beginners for
more space). Ask local dancers for the best places to go. Typical cover charge is around 5 pesos (about US$2).
Dance Floor:
Dance floors in Buenos Aires are not likely to be in
perfect conditions as they are in North America. Some
places have hardwood floors, but others have
concrete, tile, sometimes even with grooves. Also, the
floor is extremely packed- sometimes too packed to
even dance. Experienced dancers can still dance in
between couples though.
Info Magazines:
B.A. Tango Pick up this free catalog at a local kiosk. It
contains lists of classes.
El Tangauta Free coloured chronicle at dance studios
and socials.
Tango Classes:
There are hundreds of classes every day and evening
(see B.A.Tango or Tangauta) and hundreds of
teachers in the city. Some of those are good but most
just make up the dance for economic survival. Some
are so bad that you are ready to leave as soon as the
class starts. Some teachers do speak English, but
they charge more. A private lesson is 20-100 US$ per
hour. A group lesson is about 3-10 US$ per hour.
There is a great variation in price and also in quality.
Tango Package:
Some organizations offer tango tour packages. I don't
always recommend them as they tend to cut the cost
by selecting less qualified instructors. You may end
up with worse than what you can get in North America.
It may be better to find qualified instructors on your
own, especially if you speak Spanish.

Boca District
People live in this port town where houses are brightly painted

boats were painted. The famous street, Caminito (Music by

in this area.
San Telmo District
Where people gather on Sundays. There is plenty of street
entertainment and interesting shops.
